Apple MacBook Pro 16 review: a large Retina notebook for demanding work
Editor note: This English review is an original adaptation based on source material from Notebook-Center.ru.
Overview
The Apple MacBook Pro 16 is the largest MacBook in this generation and targets users who need a notebook for heavy creative workloads. In this configuration, it combines an eight-core Intel Core i9-9880H processor, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics, 16 GB of memory, and a 1 TB SSD. The source review presents it as a premium machine for photo and video editing, music work, web design, and other demanding tasks.
Its main appeal is easy to understand: a sharp 16-inch Retina display, strong everyday build quality, a quiet keyboard, powerful speakers, and long battery life for a large performance notebook. The trade-offs are also clear. The chassis is difficult to repair, the screen is glossy, the refresh rate is limited to 60 Hz, and the price sits at the high end of the market.

Design
The notebook keeps the familiar MacBook Pro look with a unibody aluminum chassis and a choice of Silver or Space Gray finishes. According to the source review, the lid opens with one hand, the hinges hold the screen firmly, and the overall construction feels rigid with very little flex. At 358 x 246 x 16 mm and 2 kg, it is still portable, but this is clearly a larger machine than smaller MacBook Pro models.
Build quality is one of the strong points, but repairability is one of the weak ones. The source notes that major hardware parts are soldered to the motherboard and some other components are glued in place, which makes servicing difficult.
Display and Audio
The 16-inch IPS Retina display runs at 3072 x 1920 with a glossy finish and a quoted brightness of up to 500 cd/m2. The source review reports wide viewing angles, strong contrast, full sRGB coverage, and 89% AdobeRGB coverage, which makes the panel suitable for image-related work. The weak point is not image quality but practicality: the glossy surface can be less convenient in bright environments, and refresh rate stays at 60 Hz.
Audio is another highlight. The laptop uses a six-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support, and the source describes the sound quality as excellent. A 720p webcam is also included above the display.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard uses a more traditional mechanism than older low-travel MacBook designs, and the source describes typing as quiet and comfortable. Backlighting is included, with automatic brightness adjustment based on ambient light. Above the keyboard, the Touch Bar remains available for task-specific shortcuts and controls.
The large Force Touch touchpad is presented as one of the best usability features of the notebook. The source highlights its precision, strong gesture support, and consistent response even near the corners. A fingerprint scanner is built into the power button for logins and payment confirmation.
Performance
This configuration is built around the Intel Core i9-9880H, an eight-core Coffee Lake processor with Hyper-Threading, paired with both Intel UHD Graphics 630 and AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics with 4 GB of GDDR6 memory. That hardware gives the MacBook Pro 16 enough power for demanding professional software and also enough graphics performance for some gaming, although gaming is not the main purpose of this machine.
The remaining hardware is also strong for productivity: 16 GB of DDR4-2666 memory and a 1 TB SSD. Combined with macOS 10.15 Catalina in the reviewed configuration, the package is aimed at users who want fast storage, strong multitasking, and enough headroom for heavier workloads.
Ports and Battery
Physical connectivity is simple: four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a combined audio jack. The layout is clean, but the lack of other built-in ports means many users will need adapters or a dock. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0.
Battery life is one of the more practical advantages. The 100 Wh lithium-polymer battery is rated in the source review for roughly 12 hours of web browsing and about 10 hours of video playback, while gaming cuts runtime to around one hour. The review also notes reasonable temperatures under load for both the chassis and internal components.
Verdict
The Apple MacBook Pro 16 is a premium 16-inch notebook for users who value a high-resolution display, strong creative-work hardware, very good speakers, a precise touchpad, and solid battery life in a well-built aluminum body. Its main compromise is value: it is expensive, limited to Thunderbolt-centric connectivity, and difficult to repair. For buyers who specifically want a large macOS notebook for demanding work, the reviewed configuration offers a strong feature set, but it does not come cheap.
